Robert Henry Brown received a bachelors degree in physics from Union College and then went on to get a masters degree in physics at the University of Nebraska and then earned a PhD from the University of Washington. During World War II, Dr. Brown did research in proximity-fused artillery, radar, and secure radio communication and he also received a Superior Accomplishment Award from the U. S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory. Following that, he served as a physics professor at Canadian Union College and Walla Walla College, before entering college administration, first as dean of administration, then vice-president, and then acting president of Walla Walla. Following this, he served as the president of Union College, before accepting the call to be the director of the Geoscience Research Institute in 1973, which he held until 1980. He did extensive study on radiometric dating, publishing 20 articles on the subject.
