The Complete Sabbath-School Record and Register F REVIEW & HERALD PUBLISHING ASSOCIATION TAKOMA PARK STATION, WASHINGTON, D.C. The Complete Sabbatth School Record and Register CONTAINING Blanks for Register of Officers, Teachers, and Scholars; Minutes for Each Sabbath; Weekly, Quarterly, and Yearly Summary of Records; and Cash Account latiopteb bp tfjc (general Conference Sabbath <£>cbool department REVIEW & HERALD PUBLISHING ASSOCIATION Takoma Park Station, Washington, D. C. INTRODUCTION Every successful Sabbath-school worker acknowledges the importance of keeping some kind of Sabbath-school record. Such a record, if properly kept and rightly used, will promote thoroughness on the part of officers, teachers, and scholars. The chief requisites of such a record are: — 1. That it should contain such items as will be valuable for future reference, as well as interesting for present perusal. 2. That it should be uniformly kept from year to year. 3. That the plan should be so simple as to make it easy to find any item to which we may wish to refer. 4. That it should be so arranged throughout as to economize the time of the secretary. It is hoped that the system introduced in this book will prove to be amply thorough and easy to keep. If any one thinks it will take too much time to keep such a record, we would suggest that this book is intended to save time. It gives a place for everything, and all that is required is to put everything in its place. A systematic method of doing work is always best and cheapest. DIRECTIONS FOR THE SECRETARY The secretary, under the supervision of the superintendent, should keep the records in this book. It is generally best for him to make an elaborated report of the school on note-paper, to be read before and approved by the school, and then to transfer in condensed form such points as should be kept for permanent record in the secretary’s record-book. The transferred portions of the record should be written in ink, and in a clear, legible hand. REGISTERS When the school is organized, the names of officers, teachers, and scholars should be entered in their respective register, and all but the last two blanks filled out as indicated by the headings over the various columns. When a scholar is appointed as a regular teacher, his name should be entered in the register of teachers, and the transfer reported after his ftame in the scholar’s register. In the scholar’s register, under the heading “ Dropped ”— when, why — write in the first column when the pupil left the school, and in the second the reason why he left; as, “ by death,” “ by removal,” etc. MINUTES The pages assigned to the recording of the minutes of the school are so simple they do not need to be explained. WEEKLY SUMMARY Each week the total membership and attendance of the school, with the offerings, should be transferred to the weekly summary blanks in the back of this book. If one session should be omitted, care should be taken to skip the column devoted to that Sabbath in the teacher’s as well as the secretary’s record. At the close of the quarter, enter the average membership and attendance and the full amount of all the quarter’s offerings in their regular places at the bottom of the page. To find the average membership, add all the numbers found in the membership column, and divide the sum by the number of sessions held during the quarter. To find the average attendance, add the numbers found in the attendance column and divide the sum by the number of sessions held during the quarter. Add the amount of offerings for each Sabbath, and enter the full amount at the bottom of the offering column. This will show the offerings for the entire quarter Add ^the number of visitors each Sabbath, and place the sum at the bottom of the visitors column; then transfer the totals to the yearly summary, placing them in the blanks designed for that quarter. YEARLY SUMMARY ^rv6-^086 year’ ac^ together the average membership for the four quar- ters. Divide the sum by four, and place the quotient in the yearly summary blank in the column of totals. Proceed in the same manner to find the average attendance Add the offerings for the four quarters. The sum will be the full amount of offerings for the year. 8 CASH ACCOUNT In the back part of the book will be found a few pages ruled for a cash account, in which should be kept an accurate record of all money received, and for what paid out. MISCELLANEOUS SUGGESTIONS OFFICERS Every school should have a superintendent and an assistant, a secretary and an assistant. It is better to have two officers, so that in case one is sick or necessarily detained from the school, some one will be qualified and expected to take his place. PROGRAM Everything should have its time and place in Sabbath-school as elsewhere. To this end the superintendent should make out a program and follow it as closely as possible. The following may be taken as a model, varying as the conditions may demand: — Song ..................................v Scripture Reading .....................I prayer V Devotional Exercises .... 15 minutes Song...................................j Secretary’s Report and Special Exercises ........................ 10 minutes Review of Lessons ............................................... 10 minutes Records and Contributions ........................................ 3 minutes Class Recitation ................................................ 25 minutes Closing Exercises ............................................... 7 minutes I hour 10 minutes CLASSIFICATION Most schools are naturally divided into five divisions: — Adults .....................................Senior Division Youth, ages 14 to 20 ....................... Junior Division Boys and girls, from 10 to 13..................Intermediate Children, from 6 to 9 ............................ Primary Children under 6 years ........................ Kindergarten When convenient, it will be best to arrange those in each of these periods of life in classes by themselves; but if there are too few of either to make an interesting class, they may be placed with those considerably older or with those considerably younger than themselves. The youth and children should be classified as nearly as possible according to their age and aptness for learning. There should be in each class not less than three, nor more than ten. When teachers are plentiful it will be probably best to have about six members in each class; but if teachers are few, the classes may have to be larger. It is better to have large classes with good teachers than small classes with poor teachers. CLASS RECORDS The names of the pupils and all head-lines should be written in the class records in ink, and for that reason they should be written by the secretary, who usually keeps the records during "the week, only giving them to the teachers to take the records. If a school is omitted, instruct the teachers to skip the column devoted to that Sabbath in the class records. ELECTION In 1903 the General Conference passed the following: — “ Resolved, That we approve of the plan that Sabbath school officers be elected by the church.” By vote of the North American Division Conference Committee, taken in the autumn of 1914, the length of the term of office in North American Division territory is one year. The nominating committee appointed in each church to nominate church officers should include in the list the names of persons to fill the various offices in the Sabbath school. Elections should be held a week or more before the close of the year, so that the new officers may have time to plan their work before the first Sabbath of the new year, at which time they should take charge of the school. REPORT TO CONFERENCE SABBATH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT The first week following the end of the quarter, the person who has acted as secretary during the quarter just ended should fill out a quarterly report blank and send it to the secretary of the conference Sabbath School Department. He should also make out the regular report of the last school when another is to succeed him the following quarter. QUARTERLY REPORT On the first Sabbath in each quarter, the secretary should read, with the report of the previous Sabbath, the record of the entire school for the quarter, as found in the footings of the quarterly summary, not forgetting to mention the present membership of the school, the number added, the number dropped, and the number of visitors during the entire quarter, with the amount of offerings and other items of interest. At the close of the year, the secretary may also read the record of the entire school for the year, as found in the yearly summary. THE HOME DEPARTMENT The Home Department is a division of the Sabbath-school, bearing the same relation to it as the primary, intermediate, junior, or any other division of the school. It is composed of members who cannot regularly attend the sessions of the Sabbath-school, although they are encouraged to do so whenever they have opportunity. The members are provided with the Sabbath-school lessons, study at their homes, keep their individual record, and report to the school once a quarter. Like other divisions of the school, the supplies may be provided from the Sabbath-school treasury, as the Home Department sends its report with its offerings to the school at the close of the quarter. The members of the Home Department will keep a record and send in their report at the close of the quarter. In making out the regular quarterly reports of the school, the Sabbath-school should count the membership and average attendance of the Home Department just the same as the membership of any other division. Such members are counted present according to the marking of their record envelope.
