“ But it was not merely to accomplish the redemption of man that Christ came to the earth to suffer and to die. He came to ‘magnify the law’ and to “make it honorable.” Not alone that the inhabitants of this world might regard the law as it should be regarded; but it was to demonstrate to all the worlds of the universe that God's law is unchangeable “ GC p. 503. MEETING THE ALLEGATIONS OF LUCIFER The allegations which Lucifer raised against God's law and character have been very deceptive and have reverberated throughout the entire universe. God’s law, which is a transcript of His character, has been stigmatized and misrepresented and questions and doubts have been raised which will have to be re- solved before the universe can be secure from another defection. That has been taking a long time. God has had to delay the clos- ing up of the great controversy for much longer than He intend- ed. Had Adam and Eve never yielded to the sophistry of Lucifer, the great controversy would have ended long ago. But for the sake of man and the onlooking universe, Christ has had to let the great controversy go on so that the issues involved would be more fully manifested till all who are willing to see will see the truth about the character of God and His law. By what means will the issues of the great controversy be fully revealed and finally resolved? Many would claim that Christ coming to earth has already settled all the questions and doubts raised by Lucifer and his hosts in the great controversy. While it is true that Christ's life and death did answer many of the doubts and questions raised by Lucifer, yet the fact that the great controversy did not end after Christ died on Calvary is evi- dence that there were still some questions remaining that need to be resolved. In Desire of Ages p. 761 we read, “ Yet Satan was not then Jesus, my mind has been much exercised. Many who profess to be look- ing for the speedy coming of Christ are becoming conformed to this world and seek more earnestly the applause of those around them than the approbation of God. They are cold and formal, like the nominal churches from which they but a short time since separated. The words addressed to the Laodicean church describe their present condition per- fectly “ EW p. 107. Because of the spiritual retrograde of the early Advent be- lievers, the final events could not move forward and the signifi- cance of the fit man leading away the scape goat had to be post- poned for a later time. However, the events which are transpir- ing around us at the present time indicate that we are in the be- ginnings of the final crisis and closing events. Therefore the sub- ject of the fit man leading away the scape goat is taking on re- newed significance. Following is the vision about the scape goat being led away as mentioned in Leviticus 16:20-22. “Then I saw that Jesus” work in the sanctuary will soon be fin- ished. And after His work there is finished, He will come to the door of the first apartment, and confess the sins of Israel upon the head of the Scape Goat. Then He will put on the garments of vengeance. Then the plagues will come upon the wicked, and they do not come till Jesus puts on that garment, and takes His place upon the great white cloud. Then while the plagues are falling, the Scape Goat is being led away. He makes a mighty struggle to escape, but he is held fast by the hand that leads him. If he should effect his escape, Israel would lose their lives. | saw that it would take time to lead away the Scape Goat into the land of forgetfulness after the sins were put on his head Spalding-Magan Collection, p. 2. Some expositors have tried to identify the fit man as Christ, who conquered Satan at the cross. However, that identi- fication is not compatible with the typology of the sanctuary. Christ was represented by the High Priest who brought the con- 23
