Can’t decide whether she wants to stay in China or go home to America. Speaks again of how they couldn’t get help at the hospital and how she feels that contributed to Elmer’s death.
  • Transcription: On Train Dearest folks: I just left Nanking and I will be in Chiao T’ou Tseng at about noon. I hope there will be someone to meet me. The trip down has been so lonely, but I have to get used to it. It was heartbreaking to leave Peiping. It was our first home. I really do want to come to America. If I am as lonesome as I have been the last couple of weeks the I will not stay here. It would be better to be with my own people. After all it means little to anyone else. Then again I will probably be sorry if I get home and have nothing to do. I must work, and there is so little to do in America. I had enough after I sold the living room set, the bedroom set and victrola to pay up everything including hospital and funeral expenses. I could do that because the mission paid Elmer’s salary to the end of June. Then if I get the $35 you sent it will keep me until I begin working and get some wages again. The mission will pay the funeral expenses I think. If they don’t then everything is paid for anyway. I can see the lotus flowers in the canals as I look out of the train window. If only Elmer had lived we would be going to Tsing Tao about now. Sometimes I think “Why didn’t we leave Kalgan before, then I would still have Elmer. Never will I forget how the men acted about voting for the foreign nurse. They voted it because Elmer held out and said we would not stay, and not because they thought we needed it. None of the men realized Elmer’s physical condition. They all acted like, “Well we all work hard too.” Just the Sunday night before Elmer died before committee meeting I said, “I hope you don’t stay up too late, for Elmer will be sick if you do.” Christian said, “We all need rest.” I must close now. Here I am at Chiao T’an Tseng. It is lovely here. I swim twice a day in the pool. I am so lonesome. I hope I get some mail soon. Love, Leatha
