  • Transcription: My dearest Leatha, I must get this love note off to you right away for I love you so & think so much of you, and I know you will be looking when the mail man comes. There have been so many coming this way that you have been fortunate in sending your letters. I don’t know whether or not Christian came last night, but I know that they have decided not to go today – Last night Orel & Mrs Maltsev came in about supper time. He had received the letter about his leaving, the day before. Mr Orel’s passport expires at the end of this month so he had to come to attend to it. Mrs. Maltsev needs a day to get what they need, so they are going back together tomorrow. Well, yesterday was full of excitement from morning till night. In the morning I had seen my patients at about 9:30 when Elder Appel asked me what I could do about getting a passport for him & the car to go to Mongolia. There is a lot of red tape at the government so I promised to see General Tang. About 10 o’clock I rode out to see him, but he had important visitors and I had to wait about ½ hr. When he came in he insisted that I have breakfast with him so I did – enjoyed it very much, while he had his men fix the pass for Elder Appel. I came back to the hospital, had two operations & several outpatients. Removed a dermoid cyst from a man’s head, had hair inside of it. Also did a radical fistulectomy – Had dinner late so it was almost 2 o’clock when we finished. Went on an outcall, then went to Shangpu – Just finished seeing patients when General Feng sent a car to bring me to the hospital. A General Shang, had shot himself in the abdomen when putting a pistol into his pocket. He’d come in about 3:15 and I got here at 3:45, and he had lost very little blood. - The bullet had not come out, could not void so I catheterized & obtained blood so the bullet had penetrated the bladder. During the night I placed a retention catherter, and this morning there is no blood in the urine, and he has very little pain. Last evening the hospital was over- run with prominent men & officers of all kinds, for this General Shang is the representative of Liu Kuli Tang who has just turned over from Manchu- kuo – Elder Appel was very thrilled, and said that it is more exciting every time he comes here. The man is staying first class and has two Russian bodyguards & a servant. We had no “fatze” so we put him in the chapel room. Well, after Orel came there was a question about his passport or he couldn’t return with them. I tried to get the police officials on the telephone but couldn’t locate them. Finally I hopped on my bicycle and went to see Feng Yü Hsiang. He was outside reviewing troops but had me come where he was, sat and talked with me about 10 min. I asked him about the passport and he ordered his officer to make it out. In about 15 min I had the passport and was on the way home. It pleased Elder Appel very much that I could do these things for him. Elder Appel took the pass from General Fang to the police dept, and instead of costing $30-40, and taking a day or two, it cost him $2.00 and they fixed everything in less than an hour. I was afraid that I would have to operate on this general, but he is much quieter this A.M. so I am just watching him carefully - Mr. Christian just came over and said that he had left your letter in his office, so I won’t have any today, Oh, but I love you so, and I’d show you how much if you were here – I’ll be so thrilled when you come back. I must get about my work for it is already getting late – Your lonely lover boy. Elmer Elmer has written me every day I’ve ever been separated from him. Isn’t he precious?
